About

Who we are:

  • We are a volunteer group of Kailua renters and homeowners working in association with Faith Action for Community Equity.  We believe housing is a human right, and we are interested in ensuring affordable rentals for our low-income families, seniors and disabled on fixed incomes in Kailua. We believe Kawainui Affordable Rental Project to be a thoughtful and well-designed project.

  • This Project consists of 73 units located at the corner of Kawainui St. and Oneawa St. in downtown Kailua. Ninety-five percent of the units are for local families earning $36,000-$72,000 per year, with monthly rents of $521-$1400 per month.

Our challenge for Kailua:

  • There are over 38,000 people who live in Kailua, but lower-wage workers who have grown up here or work in our restaurants, grocery stores and coffee shops are almost universally priced out of the rental market. They are forced to find housing away from their relatives or workplaces in Kailua, spending a lot of time on the road. Those who live or work in the 96734 zip code will be given preference at Kawainui Affordable Housing Project.

  • Most people in Hawaii consider $1,500/month rent for a 2-bedroom apartment to be affordable for a family of 4.  However, the typical market-rate rent for a 2-bedroom apartment in Kailua is nearly twice that amount, $2,840/month.

  • Kailua has one of the highest housing cost-to-income cost ratios on Oahu: Housing costs consume 45% of household income in Kailua, compared to 29% for Urban Honolulu. Given these extraordinarily high costs, Kailua has an especially great need for affordable housing, more so than other parts of Oahu.

  • This proposed development consists of 73 rental housing units located at the corner of Kawainui St. and Oneawa St. in downtown Kailua.  Ninety-five percent of the units are for local families earning $36,000-$72,000 per year, with monthly rents of $521-$1400 per month.

  • No affordable rentals have been built in Kailua in over 30 years because it's never the "right" location. We believe it is time to work together to provide housing for all of those who make up the fabric of our community.

A solution:

  • Kawainui Affordable Rentals will provide homes for over 70 local families. These homes will be within walking distance of schools, employment, and shopping, thereby eliminating the need for cars. There will also be a bus stop located right in front of the site.
